Transparency is what we see without having to scrape below the surface.

Transparency should be built in from the very beginning.

Yesterday evening, I was asked what the Hyam Institute intended to do regarding the privacy of apps and web platforms.

I answered the question with a question:

"When you click on either accept or reject cookies on a website, you are hoping that button is actually connected to something."

There was a look of horror as they realised that they had never considered this possibility.

"So you mean that even though I reject cookies, the website may still be tracking me with cookies?" they asked.

I smiled.

Real transparency requires that when companies claim we control our own privacy, that control is authentic, not just a talking point.
